Investment Management Division

For our family, our trustees, and the advisors who hold our accounts

This division is closed. It manages the firm's own liquid assets and those of the family trusts we serve. We do not take on outside clients and nothing on this page is an offer of investment advisory services.

How the Assets Are Managed

Roughly half of the division's assets are managed directly by the firm. The other half sits with outside investment advisors — a group of about seventeen firms, each holding a portion of the portfolio under its own mandate.

That split is deliberate. Running money in-house alongside outside managers gives us a live comparison rather than a theoretical one: the same period, the same market, the same owners, measured the same way.

Self-directed

About half the assets, managed by the firm. Positions are chosen and held here, and the results are reported alongside everything else.

Third-party advisors

About half the assets, held across roughly seventeen outside advisory firms, each managing to its own mandate.

How We Measure It

Every relationship is measured over the same period and against the same public benchmarks — the S&P 500, the NASDAQ 100, and broad US, international and bond index funds. The comparison figures below are computed automatically for the exact period shown, so our number and the market's number can never be quoted from different windows.

For the advisors who hold our accounts, this is the practical point of the page: it is where the goal for the coming year gets set. If you manage a portion of our assets and want the detail behind any figure here, write to us.

Methodology. These market figures are total returns including reinvested dividends, measured over the identical period shown above, and computed from dividend-adjusted closing prices of exchange-traded fund proxies rather than the indexes themselves: SPY for the S&P 500, QQQ for the Nasdaq-100, and VTI, VEU and AGG directly. QQQ tracks the Nasdaq-100, not the full Nasdaq Composite. Where a period boundary fell on a non-trading day, the prior trading day's close was used; the window actually measured is August 22, 2025 – August 21, 2026. Past performance does not guarantee future results.
